Primal delta blues - Free music downloads
Rod jook Jones was born in the deep deep South (Dorset) in the mid-50s, and got lost in the Blues a long long time ago. As a child in the sixties he spent a lot of time at his Grandparents' house, hanging out with his young Aunt, who was like a big sister. She was very much part of the 60s Blues boom, singing in a band which included Zoot Money and Andy Summers, later of the Police. She worked in a music shop and could get hold of hard-to-get US imports. Jook would spend hours sitting with her listening to Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Lightnin Hopkins, Leadbelly, early (pre choirs and string sections) Ray Charles, Muddy Water and many others. Probably the two that influenced him the most were Son House and Bukka White, with their amazing metal resonator guitars.
Jook made his first public performance at the age of 17, singing and playing slide guitar and harmonica with the legendary Cliff Lift and the ZigZags. A long and varied musical path has followed, including the Submersibles in the early 90's and the blues classic Yella Cross The Dog album with Travellin Trevor Bailey, which will be available on Lazy Bear soon as a free, CD quality download.
These days, employed as a brewer by the Meantime Brewing Co, the jook spends his spare time working on the Deptford Saints project with, principally, Wicksie Wicks, but also playing primal delta blues on his collection of resonator guitars. His solo album of self-written songs and classics of the delta repertoire is now available on Lazy Bear as a free, CD quality download. Just click on "Free Album download" on the menu to the left.
